Omani cuisine is predominantly Arabic with Indian influences. Rice is always present, as are the typical Arab "sauces" such as hummus and mutabel. The most popular dishes are based on chicken, fish, dromedary, sheep served with rice (Biryani, Mandi or Maqbus). Vegetables are often stewed with a much more delicate spiciness than the Indian one. The "shwua" deserves a separate discussion, the kid left to marinate for a whole day and cooked slowly underground. It is the typical dish consumed in families during Eid, the important Islamic holidays. Salads, fresh fruit, dates and "halwa" complete the rich Omani cuisine. The non-alcoholic drinks are essentially fresh fruit juices and the excellent "lemon mint", prepared with lime and fresh mint. Finally, "kawa", Omani coffee, flavored with cardamom, which is part of the country's tradition and hospitality. Non-Muslims are allowed to bring in two liters of alcohol. It is forbidden to consume alcohol in public places other than authorized premises, such as hotels and restaurants. Even in licensed establishments, alcohol is served at set times. It is illegal to carry alcohol in your car.
During the month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast from dawn to dusk every day. Fixed prayer hours are observed and during the day non-Muslims may eat, drink or smoke but not in public places and it is polite to avoid doing so in the presence of a Muslim. Restaurants are closed during the day except for some in hotels.
Oman is a Muslim country and it is important that, as guests of the country, you respect local customs. It is recommended that women do not wear revealing, too-tight clothing, miniskirts, shorts or pronounced necklines. Topless on the beach is not allowed. Men must wear shirts/t-shirts and long trousers in public places, restaurants, museums, villages, souqs and mosques. Knee length shorts can be used on the beach or by the pool, during tours when the guide suggests this. To visit the Grand Mosque, women must be covered up to the ankles and wrists, no transparency and no cleavage in front or behind the shoulders and place a scarf on the head. Men must wear long trousers and a shirt/t-shirt with sleeves (no undershirt). No splits in skirts or cuts in jeans.
When visiting a village (traditional species), maintain respectful behavior and avoid noise. Generally the inhabitants are hospitable and smiling, reciprocating with a smile is much appreciated. Do not enter homes, even if the door is open, without being invited. If this is the case, it is good practice to take off your shoes to enter inside
The absolute best time to visit Oman is from October to April. From May to July the hottest period with temperatures that can reach 50 degrees. During the months of August and September temperatures drop, but humidity can remain high along the coast of Muscat, although sea breezes can mitigate the effect. From Ras Al Jinz towards the south the climate is more pleasant even in summer. In the mountain areas (Jabal Shams and Jabal Akhdar) the climate is extremely pleasant in summer, while in winter it is cold with temperatures that can reach 0 degrees at night. The south, the Dhofar region, has a different climate as it is subject to the passage of the summer monsoon which brings mists and rains, transforming the landscape in the regions towards the coast and the mountains. The temperature fluctuates around 28°C, it rains constantly and it can be very windy. From mid-May to October the sea is not suitable for swimming due to high waves. In winter the temperature is pleasant, from the end of October to April is the best time to visit Dhofar. If you want to admire the spectacular panorama with the green vegetation and the wadis full of water and waterfalls, you must visit Dhofar from mid-September to mid-October, before the landscape slowly tends to dry up again. Musandam can be visited all year round even if it is very hot in summer.
Located at the eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman occupies a strategic position directly overlooking the Indian Ocean. This position has made Oman over the centuries a focal point for commercial exchange towards Asia and Africa. Its territory of 309,500 square kilometers is made up of 80% desert and is crossed by two large mountain chains, one which from the northern region of Musandam descends in an arc to Ras Al Hadd for approximately 650 km and another in the region of Dhofar which crosses it until it reaches Yemen. These mountain ranges have played a fundamental role in the life of the country thanks to the numerous aquifers present which are essential for life. A spectacular, very long coastline of over 1700 kmit overlooks the Indian Ocean to the east, while to the south and west the great Rub al Khali desert forms the border with Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The territory of Oman is extraordinarily varied, no country on the Arabian Peninsula offers such a variety of landscapes: mountains, islands, deserts, wadis, oases and also such an important historical legacy, with over 500 buildings of historical value. In the villages and traditional markets, you can still experience the charm of authentic “Arabia” and few other countries make hospitality an essential element of life as happens in Oman. For nature and photography lovers, Oman is a destination not to be missed, just as its great deserts, in particular Rub al Khali, offer unforgettable emotions and the charm of adventure.
Politically Oman is a Sultanate, therefore an absolute monarchy. From 11 January 2020 Haitham bin Tairik is the new Sultan, succeeding Qaboos bin Said, a fundamental figure for the development of the country for almost 50 years.
Oman is divided into 11 regions/governorates and 61 Provinces (Wilayat):
Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman since 1793, already mentioned by Ptolemy in the 2nd century, is today a beautiful modern city overlooking the Gulf of Oman, surrounded by mountains that made it impregnable for centuries. Only the Portuguese managed to conquer it in 1507, leaving 3 forts as evidence of approximately 150 years of dominion over Oman. Muscat, develops longitudinally parallel to the coast for about 50 kilometres, is full of gardens, beaches and is a jewel of order and cleanliness. About 1 and a half million inhabitants live here and all the political and administrative buildings of Oman are located. Muscat is a very interesting city to visit with its monuments of great interest and some museums useful for understanding the history, culture and traditions of the Sultanate.
The Great Mosque was built from 1995 to 2001 , expressly commissioned by Sultan Qaboos and which has become one of the symbols of the city. Refined and elegant, the Great Mosque with its five minarets is surrounded by a beautiful garden and can accommodate up to 20,000 faithful. Vestiges of the Portuguese era are the 3 Forts: Jalali , Mirani and Muttrah . Also in the Muttrah area is the colorful Souq with numerous narrow streets and countless shops where you can buy everything and the Ryam , a large incense burner, Oman being famous for the production of the most prized incense in the world. In October 2011 the first Opera House was inaugurated of the Arabian Peninsula. Located in the Qurum district, the Muscat Opera is a very elegant building surrounded by a lush garden and an adjoining gallery of prestigious boutiques. Finally, the coast south of Muscat offers landscapes of incredible beauty with mountains that fall into the sea, enchanting bays, islets, natural arches and fjords, including Bandar Khayran , a true natural jewel, an ideal destination for those who love diving and snorkelling.
The Sharqiya region is located south of the Muscat governorate and has a very varied geography. The splendid coastal strip flanked by the mountains of the Hajar range which separates it from the great Wahiba desert. Breathtaking landscape scenarios where nature reigns supreme. The coastal strip is characterized by numerous “wadis” that flow into the sea until reaching Sur, capital of Southern Sharqiya, an ancient commercial port that flourished in ancient times, in particular for traffic towards Africa. Sur is famous for the shipyards where they build the “dhows”, the typical Omani boats still by hand using traditional methods. This seaside town stands on a beautiful natural lagoon that can be observed from Ayjah, the original settlement of the city where the lighthouse, the last outpost of the Portuguese, is located. Among the wadis along the coast to visit in particular Wadi Arbeen which follows the river bed for about 30 kilometres, Wadi Shab or “gorge between the cliffs” which offers a spectacular trekking route inside and Wadi Tiwi, a very long and fascinating wadi enriched by waterways and where you can observe the rhythm of Omani rural life.
South of Sur, past Ras Al Hadd – the western tip of the Arabian Peninsula – you reach Ras Al Jinz , a tiny town that has become famous for the protected area where green turtles (Chelonias Mida) come, especially in summer, to lay their egg. Continuing further south along the coast you arrive at Shannah, the embarkation port for the large island of Masirah , an authentic natural jewel surrounded by white beaches where turtles come to lay their eggs. The island is famous in the summer for windsurfing lovers, as the area is affected by monsoon phenomena.
Within the region, the fascinating Wahiba Sands desert, one of Oman’s two great deserts, with high golden dunes that follow one another down to the sea, offers unforgettable scenery. Not far away is a mountain oasis-wadi, Wadi Bani Khalid, which has always been a tourist attraction for the Sultanate, with a perennial stream that creates small lakes with emerald waters. Finally, in this region of Bedouins there are two traditional markets of particular interest: the Sinaw market which is held on Thursdays, the only one where dromedaries are sold in a market, and that of Ibra which is held on Wednesdays, known as the women’s market, as it was once reserved only for women’s commercial activities. In these two Bedouin markets you can buy typical facial masks, as well as other typical products such as kajal, henna and colorful fabrics.
Finally, in this region there is one of the most singular and extraordinary deserts, which takes the name of Woodland, south of Jalan Bani Bu Ali, a town famous for the 52-domed Mosque and the still unrenovated Fort. Woodland is an immaculate desert characterized by very white dunes and crossed by a real forest, hence the name. The landscape is as unique as it is extraordinary with these patches of intense green that contrast with the white of the dunes.
The Dhahirah region occupies the north-western area of the Sultanate of Oman on the border with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. This position made it a transit point for commercial caravan routes. In fact, its capital Ibri derives the term from the word “ubur” which means “transit”. Not far from Ibri are two locations Bat (and Al Khutm) and Wadi Al Ayn which host a very important archaeological site dating back to the Third Millennium BC consisting of a complex of tombs that form a true necropolis. The Bat necropolis includes several types of monumental tombs which can be divided into two types: one beehive-shaped from the Hafit period located on rocky slopes, another extends along a river terrace. 22 kilometers from Bat is Al Ayn which houses a series of tombs aligned to form a silhouette in a suggestive position along the crest of a hill. Most of these tombs are circular in shape with a single chamber and small in size dating back to the beginning of the third millennium, while others are larger and multi-chambered dating back to the second half of the third millennium. The site is registered in the UNESCO list as a world heritage site
The Dhofar region occupies the southern part of Oman and is the largest region in the Sultanate. Salalah, its capital, is an important city that can be the starting point for discovering the extraordinary beauty that this region offers. Dhofar is very different from other areas of the country, starting from the climatic point of view which influences the entire area. In fact, in the summer period Dhofar is subject to a monsoon called “Khareef” which brings rain and great humidity with temperatures that do not exceed 30 degrees. This is why in Dhofar there are no date palms but only coconut palms. The region is also crossed by a mountain range, but with peaks that do not exceed 2000 meters and which take on a green appearance in summer thanks to the effect of this monsoon. In these areas Boswellia Sacra grows, or incense tree, which has always been the wealth of the country. In fact, in Oman, the most valuable incense in the world is produced, the same one that was once exported by sea or by caravan. Dhofar hosts one of the main sites under the protection of UNESCO, called Frankincense Land, made up of 4 distinct sites: the ancient city ofAl Baleed dating back to the 6th century, Sumhuram , an ancient port for shipping incense founded in the 3rd century BC and abandoned in the 5th century AD, the mythical city of Ubar mentioned in the Koran and in the 1001 Nights, located 170 kilometers from Salalah, which it was the last supply outpost before the desert, and Wadi Dhawkah, a protected area with thousands of incense plants. Continuing along the coast south of Salalah (area called West Salalah) you reach Mughsail, a beautiful beach that ends along an imposing rock face tormented by cracks which in the event of wave motion causes the phenomenon called “blowholes” with high sprays of sea water that come out of the cracks. Continuing along a panoramic road, you descend towards one of the most evocative beaches in all of Oman: Fizaya Beach , with white sand mixed with rocks and an emerald sea. The area north of Salalah (called East Salalah) is home to the archaeological area of Sumhuram and inside a beautiful wadi called Wadi Darbat, with an emerald watercourse, tamarind trees and where you can easily encounter herds of free-roaming dromedaries. Continuing in a northerly direction you come across the ancient city of Mirbat, with old Yemeni style houses. Following the spectacular coast you can admire panoramas of extraordinary beauty with mountains and beaches, and by observing the sea carefully it is easy to spot schools of dolphins and sardines. Once past Hasik, we continue up to one of the most spectacular wadis in all of Oman, Wadi Shuwaymiyah, which wedges inland offering fabulous views. Off this coast there is a group of islands of immaculate beauty: the Hallanyat Islands , famous for the presence of large pelagics.
Proceeding inland from Salalah and passing Thumrhait you reach Shishr (Ubar), from where you continue inland to Al Hashman , the last outpost before the great sea of sand of the Rub Al Khali desert , also called the “desert of deserts”. This spectacular desert is 1000 kilometers long and in absolute size is the second largest desert in the world . Largely unexplored Rub Al Khali is characterized by very high dunes, up to over 450 metres, interspersed with flat expanses of debris. The colors change from area to area. Discovering this desert is a unique experience that allows you to fully experience the charm of adventure.
Located approximately 175 kilometers from Muscat, Nizwa is the capital of the Dhakiliya region and the first capital of the Imamate of Oman in the 9th century, as well as the heart of Ibadism, the branch of Islam most represented in Oman. In Nizwa there are very ancient mosques, now renovated, which date back to the period of the advent of Islam. Nizwa is famous for the Fort consisting of an imposing circular tower, one of a kind in Oman. Fort built by Imam Sultan bin Saif al Ya’aruba in 1648, a fundamental figure for the history of Oman as he was the imam who managed to definitively expel the Portuguese from Oman. Attached to the Fort is the oldest Castledating back to the 9th century with various rooms and classrooms dedicated to teaching, Nizwa being the religious and cultural center of the time.
Nizwa is famous for its set of Souqs, which are located adjacent to the citadel and where you can buy everything, but in particular “kanjar” (typical Omani dagger) and silver jewellery, Nizwa being in fact famous for the artisanal manufacturing of silver. On Friday the traditional livestock market is held, where sheep and cattle in particular are sold with the typical Arab bargaining.
About 30 minutes from Nizwa there are other places of great interest such as Jabrin , where the most refined Castle in Oman stands, dating back to the 17th century, a period during which Imam Bil Arab bin Sultan al Ya’aruba moved the capital of ‘Oman right in Jabrin.
A short distance from Jabrin is the fortified city of Bahla with 12.5 kilometers of walls inside which there were 18 mud villages and the imposing Fort. Dating back to the 12th century, Bahla was the first Omani site to be included in the UNESCO list, in 1987, as a World Heritage Site. A short distance from Bahla is Al Hamra with the immense and lush palm grove and the ancient village with mud houses over 400 years old. From Al Hamra starts the road that leads to Jabal Shams or Mountain of the Sun, which at 3009 meters is the highest peak in Oman. The partially off-road road climbs along a scenic itinerary until reaching a large and spectacular cleft in the mountain known as theGrand Canyon of Oman , whose wall drops almost 1000 meters. About 25 kilometers south of Nizwa is the town of Birkat al Mouz , with its spectacular palm grove, mud villages and the Falaj Al Khatmeen , one of the 5 aflaj registered in the UNESCO list. Birkat al Mouz is the access point to another spectacular Omani mountain, Jabal Akhdaror Green Mountain, the second highest peak in the Sultanate. Here there is the highest plateau in Oman, numerous fruit trees including prized pomegranates and the famous rose gardens which bloom from the end of March to April when the rose water is harvested and produced. Jabal Akhdar is a health resort for holidays, especially in summer, with numerous resorts, including luxury ones
Located at the north-eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Musandam strategically overlooks the Strait of Hormuz, which at 39 kilometers separates Oman from Iran. This peninsula is known by the name of “Norway of Arabia” as it is characterized by numerous fjords that create a unique and extraordinary landscape. Very high cliffs fall sheer into the sea and the coast is characterized by large indentations with islets, peaks and enchanting bays. The internal part, still wild, has mountain ranges that reach 2087 meters (Jabal Harim, or “Women’s Mountain”) and it is possible to observe remains of a coral reef as this area was once submerged by the sea. Khasabthe capital is the starting point for discovering the beauty of this area, by off-road vehicle for the mountains and by characteristic dhow for the fjords. In Khasab there is a fort built by the Portuguese.
Located north of Muscat Governorate, the Batinah region is known as the “belly of Oman”, due to its flat geography that fades inland on the Western Hajar range. Its capital, Sohar , birthplace of the legendary Sindbad the Sailor, has become a commercial center of great importance. In Sohar in October 2016, the beautiful Sultan Qaboos Mosque was inaugurated with a particular architectural style inspired by Central Asia (Uzbekistan) and Iran, which can accommodate 4600 faithful men and 470 women. The fish market as well as the Fort near the sea are also very interesting. The internal part of this region has very interesting attractions such as the beautiful Al Hazm Castle, one of the most evocative in Oman dating back to 1712, the ancient Rustaq Fort and the Nakhal Fort , probably of pre-Islamic origins which was built to guard the immense and lush palm grove (Nakheel means date palm) and the Thawarah Hot Spring . Continuing inland towards the Hajar chain, you come across numerous spectacular wadis of great interest for geology lovers. In particular, crossing Wadi Bani Awf you reach the so-called Snake Gorge , an incredible fissure between dizzying parts that winds in the shape of a snake in the heart of the mountain. The itinerary continues to the characteristic village of Bilad Sayt and cross the Hajar range descending through Al Hamra and the Dhakiliya region. Another wadi, Wadi Mistal, leads to the mountain village of Wakan , perched on an incredible spur, from which a picturesque walking trail starts that offers extraordinary views. All these areas are of great attraction for trekking lovers.
The Al Wusta region is the least densely inhabited region of Oman, with a flat morphology, and which within it has a coastline of extraordinary beauty. Just south of Khaluf Bay , the desert with white sands fades into a blue and transparent sea, offering a naturalistic jewel of rare beauty. Continuing south you reach Duqm, a port city in great development and destined to become one of the most important commercial centers in Oman. The surroundings of Duqm offer areas of great naturalistic interest with very long beaches of white sand bathed by a turquoise and transparent sea, large rock formations with walls that fall dizzily creating landscape scenarios of great charm. Incredible lagoons are natural habitats for a vast array of birds and fish that live undisturbed in an immaculate environment. Continuing inland you reach Jalooni and then the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary, the reserve of white oryx, an endangered breed successfully reintroduced in this area.
